Execution Response and Advocacy

Home » Execution Response and Advocacy

When an execution warrant is signed in Florida, the 30-day clock starts ticking.

In the final weeks before an execution, legal teams work around the clock to present evidence, pursue appeals, and seek mercy. At the same time, public awareness, community action, and media attention can play a critical role in ensuring decision-makers are held accountable and that every voice is heard.

FADP serves as the central coordinating force for execution opposition efforts across Florida. Working closely with defense attorneys, family members, faith leaders, and coalition partners, we help mobilize public engagement while ensuring our advocacy remains aligned with ongoing legal proceedings.

Our work includes:

  • Coordinating statewide clemency and petition campaigns
  • Organizing letter-writing efforts to the Governor
  • Supporting media outreach and public education
  • Hosting vigils and community gatherings
  • Connecting advocates with meaningful opportunities to take action
  • Building coalitions that amplify calls for mercy and justice

Every petition signature, every letter, and every vigil attendee represents a person willing to stand against state killing and speak directly to those in power.

Our Impact in 2025

  • 57,342 petition signatures submitted
  • 9,578 letters sent to the Governor
  • Thousands of Floridians mobilized through vigils, events, and advocacy actions

Before each execution, FADP volunteers hand-deliver petitions and messages to the Governor’s office. These deliveries ensure that public opposition cannot be ignored or reduced to a statistic. They are a visible reminder that thousands of people believe Florida deserves a better path than the death penalty.

While not every execution can be stopped, every act of advocacy builds momentum for a future without capital punishment. Together, these efforts strengthen the movement for dignity, accountability, and justice across Florida.

Witness & Remembrance

When Florida carries out an execution, FADP helps ensure that the act does not occur unseen.

As the scheduled execution hour approaches, supporters gather outside Florida State Prison in Starke. At precisely 6:00 p.m., when executions are set to begin, those assembled form a line to ring a bell. One by one, each person steps forward and declares:

“Not in my name.”

This simple ritual serves as an act of witness to the state’s most severe and irreversible punishment. It affirms that, even in moments when government officials claim to act on behalf of all Floridians, there are many who reject executions and believe in a different path.

Simultaneously, people around the world gather in their own communities and online to do the same. Wherever you are, there is a space for reflection, mourning, solidarity, and resistance.

Keeping a Record of History

When an execution takes place, the machinery of government moves quickly to close the chapter and move on. FADP works to ensure these acts are not forgotten.

Following each execution, we publish a public statement documenting what occurred and why it matters. These statements are more than press releases—they are a historical record created in real time.

Our post-execution statements acknowledge the lives affected by violence, preserve the legal and human context surrounding each case, and challenge efforts to reduce a complex human tragedy to a brief headline or official announcement.

Over time, these statements form a collective archive of witness. They ensure that future generations can look back and understand not only what was done, but that it was questioned, challenged, and resisted by people across Florida.
